Joseph Pfeifer Kiwanis Camp
Since 1929, the Downtown Little Rock Kiwanis Club has served the children of Central Arkansas through its operation of the Joseph Pfeifer Kiwanis Camp. The Club created and incorporated a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, Kiwanis Activities of Little Rock, Arkansas, Inc. to own and operate the 88 acre camp.
Pfeifer Camp is near Ferndale, AR, approximately 15 miles from downtown Little Rock and 10 minutes from Pinnacle Mountain State Park. The camp is still close to the city but far enough to enjoy the outdoors. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began construction of the cabins that campers and counselors live in today.
Since 1929 Pfeifer Kiwanis Camp has provided a free summer residential camp program for 9 to 14 year olds. Annually, the Joseph Pfeifer Kiwanis Camp offers 300 children a traditional summer camp experience at no expense to the children.
Through its Alternative Classroom Experience (ACE) program, the Camp positively impacts another 150, 3rd to 5th grade “at-risk” children. The residential ACE program has resulted in improved behavior in and out of the classroom and significant increases in reading and math levels for the students. Detailed historical studies showing the positive impact of the ACE Program are available.
Pfeifer Camp also offers parenting workshops, teacher training workshops, an annual Honor Camp program, and a Counselor-In-Training program for 14 to 17 year olds. Since 1999 Pfeifer Camp has served as an AmeriCorps National Service site by hosting up to 14 full-time AmeriCorps volunteers each year.
Facilities feature a swimming pool, ball fields, a basketball court, as well as fishing and canoeing on the Little Maumelle River. Numerous hiking trails add a special touch to activities for campers. When hiking, campers learn about nature from the identification of flora and fauna to ecology. The Sanford Tollette Pavilion, a rustic rock and log open-air structure equipped with fireplace and facilities provides a perfect place for activities. Many events make use of the pavilion from barbeques to arts and crafts. An on-site dining hall and bath house complete the complement. In 2016 the newly constructed James L. Tinkle Pavilion was dedicated in front of the office building.
Support of Downtown Little Rock Kiwanis Club
In 2016, Downtown Little Rock Kiwanis Club raised over $1,800 per member to help support the Camp and fund the annual budget of approximately $1,200,000.00. Fourteen members of the Club (about 26% of its membership) sit on the Camp’s Board of Directors, and the Club has been recognized by local and national media for its positive impact in the community. The Camp’s visibility in the region and beyond was increased when its executive director Sanford Tollette was recognized in 2012 at The White House as a “Champion of Change.”
The Downtown Little Rock Kiwanis Club has not only embraced the motto of “Serving the Children of the World,” but with the support of its members and community partners, lives that motto every day through its service project, the Joseph Pfeifer Kiwanis Camp. More details of the activities of the Camp can be found at the internet web-site: www.pfeifercamp.com.
In 2016-7, MO-ARK selected the Joseph Pfiefer Kiwanis Camp as its signature project for submission to Kiwanis International.
Annual Campership Donations Drive
Every year Downtown Kiwanis Club members ask their business associates, family and friends to contribute to the scholarship fund to provide a free week of summer camp for youth in Central Arkansas. A donation of $400 will provide for one camper to spend a week at Pfeifer Kiwanis Camp.
Donations can be made to any Downtown Kiwanis member, by check to Pfeifer Camp (5512 Ferndale Cutoff, Little Rock, AR 72223), by phone at 501-821-3714, or online through Pay Pal. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Debit Cards, and Pay Pal accounts.
All donations to this 501(c)3 organization are 100% tax deductible.
